Overall, the works included in the Auction highlight the wealth and diversity of artistic creation in Cyprus, Greece and Europe
Cypria Auctions will hold its Summer Auction on June 17 at Gallery K in Nicosia. The auction highlights artists who shaped the visual identity of Cyprus and Greece while also enlightening the creative dialogues that link the two countries to the wider European artistic tradition. The auction includes about 160 works of Greek, Cypriot and European art, sculpture and historical textiles (textiles).
The auction includes works of significant forms of Cypriot and Greek art, including Telemachos Kanthos, Andreas Karayan, Lucia Nikolaidou, Leyteris Economou, Alexander Alexander Alexandrakis, Spyros Vassilios, Markos Kampanis and Dimitris Mytaras, offering a wide picture of artistic developments in Cyprus and Greece from the early 20th century to today. The section of sculpture includes works by Theodoros Papagiannis, Giorgos Kyriakou, Dimitris Michlis and Ioannis Antonios, further expanding the range and diversity of the auction.
At the center of the auction are two important works by George Paul Georgiou (1901–1972), one of the top figures of 20th century Cypriot art. The two works highlight the artist's unique ability to move between the experienced experience and the world of myth, creating images deeply rooted in Cypriot reality and also associated with wider Mediterranean narratives of memory, identity and culture.
In the work Mother and Child (c. 1954) (€35,000 – €55,000), Paul George transforms an intimate scene of everyday life into a composition of rhythm, tenderness and internal intensity. The two forms form part of an almost flat landscape of blue, pale and earthy shades, where man and place look unbroken. The whole composition is defined by the small elevation of the courtyard wall with the intense diagonal which heads down and where it is defined by the perceived axis created by the hand of the mother and child. This opposing move exudes rhythm and intensity while balancing the whole set. Thus, the space seems abstract and flat where figures and nature unite in ‘an original visual mixing by exceeding the role that has been attributed to them.
On the contrary, Centaurine (c. 1959) (€45,000 – €70,000) takes us to the world of myth and antiquity. In this iconic oil painting, the excellent female figure of Centaurus, framed by a shocking red background, refers to the archaic figurines of Cyprus and the deeper cultural backgrounds of the island. The female Centaurus is deleted with inert curves while the various shapes from vertical, horizontal and oblique lines create the sense of an intense internal vibration With its long characteristics and intense frontality, the composition connects the contemporary artistic language of the artist with the mythical and archaeological memory of Cyprus.
John Kapodistrias' New Testament (Evaluation: €4,000 – €6,000)
Among the historical evidence that stands out in the auction is a copy of the New Testament offered to John Kapodistrias just before his murder in 1831. The publication was printed in Geneva in order to distribute it to the schools of the newly formed Greek state and is part of the efforts to promote education and literacy in the early years of modern Greece. This copy was offered to Kapodistrias by H. N. Glaser, an envoy of the Geneva Bible Society, and bears a gold inscription to the first Governor of Greece. Combining historical significance and exceptional origin, it is a rare presumption directly linked to one of the most important personalities..
