It is one of the most enigmatic works of ancient drama.
Pre-sale began for the summer production of ThOK Ion of Euripidis, directed by Thomas Moschopoulos. The performances in Cyprus will be held at the Makarios III Amphitheatre, School of Blinds on 16, 17 & 18 July, at the Pattichio Municipal Amphitheatre Larnaca on 22 July, at the Ancient Theatre of Curiou on 24 July and then production travels for performances at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on 28 & 29 August, as part of this year's Athens and Epidaurus Festival.
It is one of the most enigmatic works of ancient drama. Ion is not a "clean" tragedy: he moves on the border between tragic and comedic, myth and realism, mysticism and skepticism, putting the issue of identity and belonging at the centre. A work that appears to be directly interlocutory with modern experience, at a time when everything is constantly being questioned and renegotiated.
After last year's successful collaboration with THOK in the Inspector of Nikolai Gogol, renowned, experienced director Thomas Moschopoulos returns to the Organization and, at the same time, to the Athens Epidaurus Festival, testifying to a new reading of the Euripidean drama. His return marks another creative meeting with Euripides, a poet with whom he has been confronted repeatedly in the past (Vacchas, Alcist, Iphigeni in the country of the Bulls).
The action unfolds in the sacred Oracle of Apollo in Delphi, which constitutes a threshold between the visible and invisible, between the public and private. There grows young Ion without name and awareness of his origins, striving to form through fragment a solid identity, at the same time that viewers already know the truth. Through contradictions, refractions and misinterpretations, the cloudy, almost invisible past crystallizes into a solid, tangible present, an expectation of meaning emerges through the void.
The show attempts to highlight the playful and ambiguous spirit of the work, turning the scene into a multi-primary space of reflection where idols of truth and lie overlap, reveal and hide, with the question of identity remaining open, fluid and agonizing.
