Two symbolic forms meet on stage: Memory and Myth
With a performance that combines narrative, music and the power of oral tradition, this year opens the Faneromeni Festival of Arts '26 of the Cultural Foundation of Cyprus.
On Thursday, June 18th, the musical production "MYTHOS – From Cyprus to the World" invites the public to a journey through myths, songs and stories that cross places, times and cultures.
Two symbolic forms meet on the stage: Memory and Myth. Soprano Mariza Anastasiades, in the role of Memory, and actor Peter Yorkatzis, in the role of Myth, chat through speech, song and interpretation, while Concordia String Quartet musically frames the stage narrative, creating a multi-level artistic universe.
The performance draws material from the Cypriot folk tradition and from the international mythological and musical repertoire, composing a single narrative route. From lullabies and family memories to the stories of loss, transformation and survival, myths are presented not as fossilized remains of the past, but as living accounts that continue to be carried from generation to generation.
As the performance evolves, stories change form, language and faces, however, keeping their core unchanged: the human need to remember, narrate, and give meaning to the experience of life. Through this stage composition, memory turns into song and song into a collective experience carrier, leading the audience to a conclusion where loss transforms into acceptance and continuity.
Fanemeni’26 thus launches this year’s program with a performance that bridges the Cypriot cultural heritage with universal narratives, highlighting the timeless power of myth as a means of communication, memory and identity.
