As part of the International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama 2026
The award-winning creator Lea Maleni directs the Cypriot production of this year's Festival event, Seven on Thebes of Aeschylus, produced by the Persona team, presenting a directive approach of particular dynamics and aesthetics, with an elite group of artists on her side.
At the heart of the shameless tragedy lies the brotherly conflict of the sons of Oedipus. Polynicis returns in charge of the late army to claim the authority denied to him by his brother, Eteocles, violating the agreement between them. Thebes is in suffocating siege and the confrontation is inescapably driven into a conflict without winners, where power and sister bonds clash with devastating consequences.
With Mythos, History and collective memory, the performance talks with today, focusing on fear, trauma and civil spasm. In a world of endless sister-killing conflicts that perpetuate, with the dividing lines between the perpetrator and victim becoming increasingly unclear, a troupe with different racial, religious and political treasures unites its voices into a heartbreaking multicultural coexistence, seeking light within the vortex of war.
The iconic anti-war drama of Aeschylus, his last Thebaic cycle, brings to its core the deplorable experience of the civil spasm that runs perpetually over time, remaining dramatically topical. By unearthing the language of war, it is addressed with acidity to the modern public, with anguish and despair for the outcome of human absurdity.
