On the occasion of the 90 years since the birth of the great lyraris and performer, the musical performance "Nikos Xylouris, the Archangel of Crete" has been touring since the coming June throughout Greece and Cyprus. Athens' great success was presented all winter at the UK Theatre and was warmly applauded by nearly 40,000 spectators!
The text is signed by Zacharia Petrakis and is based on multi-annual research and archival material. The direction is by Nicorest Haniotakis, artistic director of DI.PE.THE. Crete, while production belongs to Stages Network and Athens Theatres.
It is the first time that the life and work of this great Greek, the artist-symbol, Nikos Xylouris, is presented in the theatre in a high production claims with a multi-enlarged troupe and the participation of important artists of theatre and music.
The Archangel of Crete, as Psaronikos was called, comes to life in a performance that combines live music, unpublished photographs, valuable sound documents and narrative. An experiential experience that unites testimony, art and emotion.
The work attempts to recommend the form of Xylouris not only as a voice-symbol, but as an inner universe of a man who sang with the soul of a people. At the heart of the narrative are its course from Anogia and Crete of Occupation to the bhuats of Athens and the culmination of its public presence, identified with the struggle, dignity and hope of an entire era.
The spectators have the opportunity to enjoy the iconic songs of Xylouris, in new orchestrations of Andreas Katsigiannis, while the Cretan programme of the performance is musically edited by Ross Daly!
Ourania Xylouris, Nikos' life companion and guardian of his memory, has contributed substantially to the final formulation of the text.
In the performance they revive personalities-stations of the artistic and cultural life of the country, such as Jenny Karezi, Kostas Kazakos, Christos Leontis etc. Of course, a special reference is made to Nikos' relationship with Stavros Xarchakos who started with the important album "Dionysos Summer" and evolved into a strong friendship.
A few words about the project
The performance unfolds the life and course of the great Cretan singer and lyraris Nikos Xylouris. We follow the steps of the "Edonon of Crete" from his childhood in Anogia in the shadow of Occupation, to his triumphant presence in the Athenian bout of the 1970s and his early departure from life, at the age of only 44.
Guided by the narratives of his companion, Urania Xylouris and axis the songs that marked an entire era, the performance not only reflects the greatness of his voice, but reveals – mainly – the moral and spiritual weight of a personality that sealed the younger Greek culture.
