W. L. Tochman, one of the most translated Polish reporters, co‑founded the Polish Institute of Reporting with Mariusz Szczygieł. A two‑time finalist for the Nike prize, he has notably devoted books to Bosnia and to the genocide of the Tutsis in Rwanda.
In Eli, Eli (translation by Kamil Barbarski, Noir sur Blanc, 2018), he dives into the heart of Manila’s slums and questions our gaze on misery: how to tell suffering without becoming voyeuristic? Between striking portraits, the reporter’s responsibility and a critique of neocolonialism, this literary reportage interrogates the very ethics of looking.
W. L. Tochman has also just published in Poland Dolphins and Beelzebub (Wydawnictwo Literackie, 2026). The war is seen from a different angle: W.L. Tochman is primarily interested in the animals that suffer with us, without understanding why. They do not know why they must die. Like those dolphins whose brains are damaged by warship sonar, or those that perish poisoned by the fuel oil of damaged tankers.
