It’s harvest time, and the village of Acheritou invites everyone to join the celebration! This small village in the Famagusta district is located at the entrance to the Mesaoria Plain, which has been considered the true “breadbasket” of Cyprus since ancient times.
A packed program awaits guests, with something interesting for both adults and children: demonstrations, traditional crafts, and, of course, plenty of delicious food.
You’ll learn all about how wheat, grain, and flour were grown, harvested, and processed. A special highlight will be an exhibition of antique farming tools, showcasing how the harvest was carried out in the past.
You’ll also have the chance to see and purchase traditional Cypriot handmade crafts.
Local women will be baking fragrant traditional bread and preparing wheat-based dishes, including:
Trachanas—a thick traditional soup made from grain and fermented milk.
Resi—a festive dish traditionally served at weddings. It is made from coarsely ground wheat cooked in meat broth.
The festive atmosphere will be complemented by live music and traditional Cypriot dances. Guests will be able to witness a reenactment of ancient wheat processing methods: harvesting, threshing—separating the grain from the chaff—and winnowing, that is, cleaning the grain of husks.
This is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Cyprus’s rural life, learn about its traditions, sample local dishes, and discover more about the history of the island’s main agricultural crops.
