Central figure of contemporary music in Canada, Raymond Murray Schafer is recognized for his experimental approach to composition as well as his ecological thinking, as evidenced in particular by his book Le Paysage sonore : le monde comme musique, published in 1977. The composer explains about his vocal music that it seeks to establish a spiritual relationship with the environment. The Magic Songs, in particular, aim to “restore aspects of nature that have been neglected or annihilated by humanity.” The Estonian Veljo Tormis, particularly prolific in the choral music genre, blends ancient Finnish shamanist traditions with modern references in his work Raua needmine, which questions the use of natural iron for war purposes.
