Often, nature varies
We penetrate almost respectfully, by an art deco peristyle with a cathedral look. And because... rainforests, in honour of the first greenhouse, are sanctuaries of biodiversity, where only one hectare can house several hundred species of trees. In Africa, America, or Southeast Asia, plants form a dream jungle. Walk between banana trees, lianas, ferns and orchids, climb the rock to enjoy the panorama of the greenhouse, discover the adaptations and functions of plant species.
Fertile imagination
In the long adjoining gallery, the heat is that of deserts and arid environments (United States, Mexico, Sahara, Australia...). For flora, it's time to be creative! In order to resist the wariness, everything is good: bury like pebbly plants, store water in cacti-like tissues, dormancy in seeds during dry periods... From this necessity also arise strange silhouettes — like the ball, perfect for saving water —, sometimes covered with thorns or hair. Some plants even resist fire!
Natural Eldorado
Next direction: New Caledonia! The archipelago of Oceania deserved a dedicated greenhouse. On this land, long isolated, plants have specialized to the extreme: 76% of species do not exist anywhere else! A specificity that makes scientists happy... and visitors to the Museum. The greenhouse presents this flora in all its diversity, through five habitats: the humid forest, the dry forest, the mining maquis, the savannah and the mangrove. The opportunity to admire majestic local arborescent ferns or endemic species that have become rare in nature.

A last greenhouse traces the long history of the evolution of plants, from their conquest of the land that emerged to the appearance of the flower. An adventure started at least 430 million years ago, which saw several reproductive processes develop. Modern representatives of ancient species — ferns, conifers, hails — fossil parts or re-enactments of extinct plants paint a green camaieu of enchanting beauty. They show how much the plants are necessary for the creation of the Earth's atmosphere, as well as for the appearance of animal life and therefore... Man.
All of these buildings, classified as Historic Monument, were renovated from 2005 to 2010 at an unprecedented construction site. The goal? Restore their original appearance and preserve their magic, while modernizing their functioning. Four greenhouses are now open to the public, instead of two.
