How to approach Simone Veil in a different way, distinct from the already familiar path of the woman‑state? How to restore the innocence of childhood in Nice, abruptly interrupted by Occupation and deportation?
The exhibition Simone Veil. Mes sœurs et moi, created by director and photographer David Teboul, aims to reveal the intimate history of the Jacob family. Through a set of documents—correspondence, photographs, interviews—the visitor discovers a deep connection linking Madeleine (Milou), Denise and Simone before, during, and after the war.
A rarely emphasized intimate dimension. The presented archives allow one to read and hear the words and voices of the Jacob sisters, who recount their childhood in Nice, Denise’s involvement in the Resistance, Simone’s arrest, Milou and their mother Yvonne in the spring of 1944, deportation, separations, losses, and then the post‑war period, up to Madeleine’s death in 1952.
Special attention is given to their younger brother Jean, a future photographer, with an exhibition of several of his photographs that had long remained within the family circle. Jean Jacob was deported together with his father in 1944 in convoy 73. A moving and simultaneously tragic family story that fits into the larger History and bears witness to the fate of the Jews of France.
