The plot of Tosca perfectly matches the tragedy scheme: unity of time, place, and action. In two hours, passion, jealousy, hatred, sadism, and erotic impulse clash until the inevitable drama. Puccini and his librettist chose to drive this story at a hellish pace. All these ingredients give the feeling, more than a century after its creation, that Tosca is a devilishly modern work.
