From September 11 to 13, the village turns into a vibrant place of meeting, culture, and creation
Ten years after its first encounter with Kalabaso, the Xarkis Festival returns to the village. From Friday, September 11 to Sunday, September 13, residents, creators, and visitors from Cyprus and abroad will gather for a three‑day event full of art, knowledge exchange, and collective experiences.
The festival’s relationship with Kalabaso began in 2016, through its collaboration with the Tendas Cultural Festival. This year, Xarkis returns with the aim of evolving this relationship, shedding light on different aspects of the place’s history, knowledge, and contemporary life.
Kalabaso was not chosen by chance. From the prehistoric settlement of Tendas and its archaeological sites to the abandoned mines and its industrial heritage, the village has a rich, multi‑layered identity. At the same time, it remains a living place, with artists, craftsmen, producers, and people who keep an active connection with tradition and contemporary creation.
The 12th Xarkis Festival will bring together the local community with artists and creators from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Portugal, the Netherlands, Ghana, Tunisia, Sweden, and England. Through their coexistence and collaboration, they will exchange ideas, experiences, and different approaches to culture.
The program will unfold at various sites in Kalabaso and will include participatory actions, artistic interventions, discussions, and creative meetings. At its core will be collective memory, the connection to the place, and the way colonial heritage continues to affect contemporary culture.
More than a series of cultural events, Xarkis functions as an open process of co‑creation. For three days, Kalabaso will become a workshop of ideas and experiences, where visitors will not be limited to the role of spectator but will be invited to get to know the place, its people, and its stories.
Info: Friday 11‑Sunday 13 September 2026, Kalabaso, Larnaca district. Free entry.
