A set that goes from tex-mex to folk ballad, from urban blues to Latin refrains. A music that tastes like warm beer, dusty road and colorful barrios. No need to look for the concept: it's raw, festive, generous. As if Calexico had taken a detour through Champigny-sur-Marne.
We knew him in the 80s, guitar slung over the shoulder and worn jacket, as part of Wunderbach, French punk-rock band that delivered as much energy as a Clash concert on amphetamines. Manu Castillo – later known as Tio Manuel – forged his style there: direct, electric, without cheating. Then came the era of parallel roads: Outsiders, Catch 22 with Joe Hell (ex-Oberkampf), or even gigs for La Souris Déglinguée.
In short, a youth spent “muscling up his playing” in the style of Joe Strummer, Val-de-Marne version. Now settled in Brittany, the man cultivates his love of American sounds and desert spaces that he sprinkles with Spanish singing, from which he draws his roots.
In 2002, under the alias Tio Manuel, he records Rumba Urbana. The tone is set: rumbas that smell as much of the suburbs as the Barrio, rock that looks toward Austin and Mexico, and Spanish refrains that snap like slogans. Neil Young pops up in a solo (Cortez the Killer as a nod), while Strummer's ghost haunts the choruses of ¡Asi es la vida! (2004). Later, 3 Cosas (2008) establishes itself as a musical road movie: borders, barrios on fire, American illusions and raging guitars.
