Zeus—father of the gods and mortals—was greatly revered in Cyprus, and Salamis was one of the most important centers of his worship. As the god of the sky, lightning, and thunder, Zeus had numerous sanctuaries located on mountain peaks—a fitting setting for a deity who controls the weather.
One such mountain peak is Afamis, towering over the picturesque village of Koilani. The name Afamis derives from the cult epithets of Zeus—Euphemius or Euphamius. It is from this name that the festival’s name originated.
Koilani is one of the most famous wine-producing villages in the Limassol region. Here, the region’s rich winemaking heritage is honored, and the end of the harvest is celebrated.
The annual festival, whose history dates back to ancient times, is dedicated to grapes, wine, zivania, and palouzes.
In the village’s main square, accompanied by traditional music and songs, guests can:
- stroll through the picturesque streets of Kylani;
- taste wines from local wineries;
- watch a demonstration of the traditional zivania distillation process;
- sample traditional grape sweets;
- watch local artisans and craftspeople at work.
The aroma of freshly made palouzes fills the air and whets the appetite of guests, who delight in sampling this exquisite traditional Cypriot dessert.
Afamia is a festival of grapes and the harvest that brings together Cyprus’s ancient history, the winemaking traditions of Kilani, local produce, music, crafts, and gastronomy.
