Institutional, economic, and environmental violence reflect ambitions of control, exploitation, and depletion of bodies, territories, and imaginaries. At a time when the predatory logics inherent to the neoliberal model and the hate speech that accompany them continue to intensify, it is essential to oppose them with a firm refusal. The possibilities of being heard remain limited, however, when citizens are relegated to the mere role of spectators.
How can we regenerate desires for connection and action when our era produces competition and norms, and fuels self‑withdrawal and deleterious affects, starting with anger, resentment, and fear? Where can we find the resources to emerge from the night? Struggles, in what they carry of collectivity, attention to the other, joy, and desires for emancipation, seem able to open salvific cracks that let light pass again, both within ourselves and in the structures of the established order. Even when occasional, minority, or modest, resistant gestures help re‑humanize our presence in the world and the meaning of our interactions. As they multiply and connect with each other, they can transform into irresistible movements in which knowledge, hope, and experience circulate, and where other forms of relationship and cooperation are shared.
If struggle can be framed in terms of claim and power dynamics, it also manifests in transgression, in the attention we pay to vulnerability, in the recognition of our own privileges, in the deconstruction of toxic narratives, and in shared and transmitted stories. Empathy, attention, imagination, and care then become subversive forces, capable of fueling profound individual, collective, societal, and environmental transformations. The paths, practices, and horizons to begin this collective renaissance remain to be invented.
Through the presentation of the work of fifteen artists, the exhibition “Semons nos résistances” celebrates those actions that sow the seeds of joyful dissent in service of other ways of inhabiting the Earth, attentive to the living and to otherness. Moreover, it is an invitation to gather to invent, together, the world we wish to see emerge.
