In less than a week, villages, squares, trails, schools and cultural venues throughout Troodos will open their gates to a multidisciplinary four‑day program that combines science, sport, culture, youth and gastronomy
From September 23 to 26, 2026, the Troodos mountain range will become a vibrant European field of sport, gastronomy, culture and wellness, hosting the Mountain Games Cyprus 2026, a non‑profit event funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ Sport programme, with the central message “Healthy Lifestyles for All”.
In less than a week, villages, squares, trails, schools and cultural venues throughout Troodos will open their gates to a multidisciplinary four‑day program that combines science, sport, culture, youth and gastronomy. The event involves organisations and delegations from 11 countries – Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and the Czech Republic – under the coordination of the MountMed Institute.
A four‑day mountain journey
The event opens on Wednesday, September 23, in Platres with the Mountain Games International Symposium, an international scientific conference under the patronage of the Minister of Health, where scientists, doctors and institutional bodies discuss physical activity, public health and active ageing.
On Thursday, September 24 and Friday, September 25, hundreds of students from across Cyprus take part in the Elevate Your Life programme, at Agro and Omodos, with sports activities, traditional games and gastronomic workshops, including specially adapted actions for people with visual impairment or reduced vision.
Mountain Games in Action invites the public to experience the mountain actively: hikes on the Madari and Myllomeri Waterfall trails, competitive orienteering at Omodos and, on Saturday, September 26, the Mountain Games Cycling Festival with mountain‑bike races for all ages, as well as the Mentoring K12 Football Tournament in Kakopetria.
At the same time, the Mountain Culture in Motion unit brings traditional dance, music and intercultural workshops to senior centres, Platres and Omodos Square, with delegations from ten European countries meeting at the Dance Gathering on Friday evening, while on Saturday afternoon the women’s a cappella choir Amalgamation Choir closes the cultural programme in the courtyard of the Monastery of the Holy Cross.Mountain Games Futures Lab opens the discussion about the future of mountain communities, with a thematic day on mountain tourism in Agro, a youth workshop in Evrichou, and a two‑day educational trail‑certification program in the Caves, while the event concludes on Saturday at the Platres with the Mountain Games Legacy Forum, dedicated to exercise, nutrition and mental well‑being.
Taste, Move & Thrive: the gastronomic two‑day event of Omodos
One of the most enjoyable moments of the event for the general public is the two‑day Taste, Move & Thrive, on September 25 and 26 in Omodos. The Mountain Products Market hosts 30 producers in six thematic islands: honey, aromatic plants, dairy, legumes and olive oil, cured meats, vine‑related products and fermented foods. Visitors can attend an experiential halloumi‑making workshop, a workshop on Cypriot ravioli and Italian ravioli with chef Marcello Zaccaria, olive‑oil tasting, a family traditional breakfast on Saturday and a public tasting of local wineries, while Friday evening ends with a dance gathering of European countries and a concert by the musical group “Epea Pteroenta” in Omodos Square.
