Compiled by Hervé Niquet, the program of this concert holds many surprises… If the Paris Chamber Orchestra is somewhat similar to his own at the Théâtre du Châtelet, who would expect that the conductor, a specialist in French baroque opera, would be accompanied by his choir to perform orchestral melodies of Bourvil, Charles Trenet or Maurice Chevalier? Nevertheless, these artists take the main place in the program, as does the composer of successful operettas Francis Lopez, who, besides being the author of La Belle de Cadix and Chanteur de Mexico, directed the Théâtre du Châtelet in the early seventies. It was at that time that Hervé Niquet discovered the Paris of the arts and the capital’s musical life, small fragments of which are shown in the famous TV shows Maritie et Gilbert Carpentier. Hervé Niquet befriended musicologist Madeleine Milhaud, who made him promise to perform a work that her husband Darius, often with a hint of irony calling himself “a Frenchman from Provence and of Jewish faith,” wrote for the Lemon festival in Menton. Barba Garibo, entertainment on the theme of Menton folklore for mixed choir and orchestra, with texts written by Armand Lunel, is truly one of the pearls of this concert dedicated to the celebration! More than Auberge du Cheval-Blanc, excerpts from which are also included in the program, this evening promises to become a real “auberge espagnole” of musicians in love with the Théâtre du Châtelet!
