From January 29 to December 24 1923, the anarchist Germaine Berton was incarcerated in the women's prison Saint-Lazare, then at 107, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis, after the assassination of a leader of Action Française, to “avenge Jaurès”. On October 4 1926, rue La Fayette, Léona Delcourt, alias Nadja, meets André Breton by chance. This unknown woman will become the heroine of his eponymous narrative. Germaine, Léona: both born in 1902, they inspired in the 1920s the surrealists, a group of young people disgusted by war and devoted to freedom, in search of a new language.
We invite you to go meet Germaine Berton and Léona Delcourt, and to listen to the voices of two not-silent muses who left writings and drawings. We will visit the Françoise-Sagan media library (former Saint-Lazare prison) up to its panoramic roof, following in the footsteps of Germaine Berton. Then we will wander through the neighborhood in search of Léona Delcourt, thus juxtaposing two tragic trajectories.

The association “Histoire et Vies du 10e” aims to promote the history of the 10th arrondissement of Paris and the lives of its inhabitants, to ensure the preservation of its heritage and memory. It also contributes to the integration of the 10th into the Parisian environment. It operates through exhibitions, conferences, guided tours, and all other cultural activities inside and outside the arrondissement.
