In spring 1933, four young poets from Tainan founded an artisanal magazine with an evocative name: Le Moulin. Nourished by world literature through the Japanese language, they invented a new, daring, and profoundly modern poetry.
Their ambition? To reinvent literary creation in Taiwan, far from dominant political discourses, by exploring a free, inventive, and mysterious writing.
Today, nearly a century later, these fascinating texts finally reach us, presented in the collection Les joues en feu: les poèmes du Moulin (éd. Circé), thanks to the editorial work of Isabelle Rabut and Angel Pino, and the translation work of Makiko Andro-Ueda and Makiko Nakazato.
An exceptional rediscovery that extends the journey of these poets, recently highlighted by the documentary Promeneur comme un dimanche, directed by Huang Ya-li.
Isabelle Rabut is a sinologist specializing in modern and contemporary Chinese and Taiwanese literature. She has held several positions at the Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales (Inalco): first director of the Centre d’études chinoises from 2005 to 2009, then head of the China department (2007‑2009), and later the ASIEs unit from 2010 to 2013. Emeritus professor of modern Chinese literature at Inalco, she is also a translator of many modern Chinese and Taiwanese writers. Since 1997, she has directed the “Lettres chinoises” collection at Actes Sud and co‑founded the traveling collection “Lettres taïwanaises”.
Makiko Andro-Ueda holds a doctorate in French literature and is a senior lecturer in modern Japanese literature at Inalco. She represents the “modern and contemporary poetry project” of IFRAE (Institut français de recherche sur l’Asie de l’Est) at Inalco. She co‑directed the volume Poésie brève et temporalité (éd. Presses universitaire du Septentrion, 2017) and has translated several Japanese authors.
