Created in 2001 for the Ballet de Lorraine and today passed on to a new generation of performers, Rave has the look of a virtuosic, festive and colorful parade. American choreographer Karole Armitage orchestrates the meeting between voguing – with its swift movements of the hands and arms – and various forms of martial arts, set to a driving techno track by composer David Shea. The electricity of the music drives the bodies of the 25 dancers to an explosive state of tension. They make the heart of a piece envisioned as a celebration of life and the balls, ballets and carnivals of the 21st century that enhance its flavor. At its creation, Karole Armitage is in the middle of a career as exceptional as it is singular. Trained in classical ballet, she joined Merce Cunningham’s company in 1976 but soon created her own works, notably Drastic Classicism in 1981, which combines the rigor of ballet with the raw energy of punk. Since then the choreographer has continually made the worlds of scholarly dance and popular culture dialogue.
It is almost the reverse journey that Brandon Masele and Laura Defretin have been taking for 10 years under the alias MazelFreten. The duo grabs the vocabulary of electro and hip‑hop dance to forge a new language praised worldwide, with their piece Rave Lucid and also the tableau Obscurité for the opening ceremony of the J.O. de Paris 2024. Beyond their own creations, the two artists are keen on different experiences, as shown by their collaboration with singer Hervé at Chaillot in 2025. Today, MazelFreten imagines a grand form for the Ballet de Lorraine, set to a piece by electronic music composer Chloé Thévenin. Inspired by the sampling technique – which extracts, transforms and reinvents existing material – the duo subverts the codes of classical ballet to make it resonate differently, powered by the visceral energy of electro dance. The encounter opens an unexpected space where disciplines complement, contaminate and transform each other.
