At the end of the Great War, all Parisians knew the dark facade of Saint-Lazare prison in the suburbs of Saint-Denis. Behind the dilapidated walls of this former convent, we punish and treat. She is the only woman's prison in Paris and holds up to a thousand prisoners: remand prisoners, short sentences, prostitutes who have broken the regulations or have suffered from syphilis. The latter are treated in the special infirmary, a real prison hospital.
The fate of this institution, often compared to a leprosy in the heart of the capital, is played in the 1920s, marked by a repressive natalistic policy and the anguish of the "venerian peril". In 1932, the prison closed before being partially demolished. The infirmary, first transformed into a hospital for prostitutes, now houses the media library Françoise-Sagan.
Guided tours will be offered to all audiences as part of the European Heritage Days and throughout the exhibition from 17 September to 13 December:
- Saturday 19 September at 10.30am and 2pm
- Sunday 20 September at 2pm and 4pm
