The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme organises an evening of presentation of the book Vivre les auctione, raison et passion pour l'art et les objets de collection, published in April 2026 in the collection "Ethnologie de la France et des mondes contemporains" of the MSH Editions, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture.
This session of the "Books in Dialogue" will welcome Pia Torregrossa, author of the book, in dialogue with Jean-Marie Durand, journalist at Les Inrockuptibles.
At the end of this meeting, you will have the opportunity to ask all your questions to our guests.
About the book
What happens at an auction? How a good
can be sold up to 18 times its estimated price when
Others don't find the taker? Oscillating between pleasure and disappointment,
desires and reason, the actors of the sales « Art and collectibles »
occupy a scene as exciting as it is proving, where some
others engage in singular exchanges. But how roles
are they distributed, what are the steps and what is the timetable for

About the speakers
Doctor in ethnology, Pia Torregrossa is
Research Associated with the Cultural Anthropology Centre (Canthel)
University Paris Cité. At the crossroads of economic anthropology,
His research focuses on the
practices of valuation, movement and consumption of goods.
Jean-Marie Durand is a journalist and author, graduate
Paris Institute of Political Studies (promotion 1990) and
holds a degree in in-depth political studies
(1992). Head of the Arts-Scene and Ideas sections
Since 1997, he has collaborated for various media
(Philosophie Magazine, France Culture, Zadig, Trois couleurs, Ravages,
The Art NewsPaper, La Revue du Crier, Legend, C Ce Soir...). He animates
conversations with social scientists on the
Cairn platform. He also animated between 2019 and 2022 a cycle
Monthly conference on the life of ideas at the Pernod Ricard Foundation
("Inspire, breathe") and debates at Mk2 Institute. Jean-Marie
Durand has also published several essays: Homo Intellectus, a hexagonal investigation into a species in the process of reinvention (La Découverte, 2019); 1977, electric year (Robert Laffont, 2017); The cool in our veins, history of sensitivity (Robert Laffont, 2015).
