«Phaedo or Iligos»: Margaret Jursenár meets Plato in Nicosia

Andreas Araouzos brings the harrowing text of the great French writer to the outdoor square of the Municipal Theatre of Nicosia for only two performances.
One of the leading literary figures of the twentieth century visits the Platonic Phaedrus to narrate the fall from innocence to knowledge.
Before becoming a student of Socrates, Phaedrus of Elis was the most beautiful body, the most precious slave, a man who knew love as ecstasy and as destruction. As a teenager he was captured by the Spartans and sold as a slave forced into prostitution, before being freed with a ransom raised at the urging of Socrates. Phaedrus was present at the philosopher’s death and Plato chose him to recount Socrates’s last hours before he drank the hemlock. In her lyrical collection *Lights*, where she follows imaginatively and poetically the soul and mind of historical and mythic figures, Margaret Jursenár selects Phaedrus’s life as an allegory for how desire, violence, loss and knowledge transform a person.
In the harrowing text, we hear Phaedrus recount to Cephalus the moment Alcibiades bought him on behalf of Socrates. In his confession he wanders through experiences, memories, thoughts about love, beauty, violence and contemplation, composing an unending tremor. The tremor, however, is not merely the dizziness from the events, but the experience of an existence that has lost every certainty and seeks, through philosophy, a new way to stand before itself and the world.
The performance is set on the façade, the courtyard and the square of the Municipal Theatre of Nicosia, which beyond the stage becomes an ancient marketplace, with the audience watching standing or seated what happens among the columns of the iconic building and within the corridors of Phaedrus’s own thought.
