Presentation
On the occasion of Paris Design Week and the European Heritage Days, the Hôtel de la Marine hosts Hanjimania, an exhibition dedicated to the dialogue between French and Korean designers around the traditional hanji paper.
Hanjimania is above all a long story of friendship between two curators, both aesthetes, who share a common passion for art and design. Catherine Lurault and An KangEun have chosen for this exhibition at the Hôtel de la Marine to create a dialogue between two cultures and to bring together the excellence of French and Korean know‑how around an exceptional material, the traditional hanji paper, soon to be inscribed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
The Hôtel de la Marine, Garde‑Meuble de la Couronne at the end of the 18th century, which embodies decorative arts in all their forms, is a living space of transmission where ancient crafts meet today’s forms of expression.
This iconic monument on Place de la Concorde is therefore the ideal setting to stage, in the exceptional setting of state rooms, a Franco‑Korean cabinet of curiosities.
Six renowned French creators such as Studio KO, Pierre Yovanovitch, Constance Guisset, Aline Asmar d’Amman, Harry Nuriev and Jérémy Pradier‑Jeauneau will interpret this millennial craft, hanji paper, thanks to the talent of Korean artists such as Sim Jiseon, Lee Sun, Kim Woncheon, Studio Foh, Ko Somi, Yang Ji‑Yoon, Yoo Ehwa, Jin Hyoseung, Kim Yongho, Kim Heewon and master artisans (Living Treasures) Kim Samshik (hanji paper from Mungyeong) and Lee Byung‑Seop (hanji paper from Andong).
An unprecedented walk will also be offered in the heart of the stewards’ apartments where creations by renowned Korean artists will punctuate an exhibition‑route.
This program is co‑organized with the Province of Gyeongbuk. It is part of the celebration of the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Korea in 2026.

Hanji Paper
Born more than a thousand years ago in Korea, hanji paper comes from mulberry fibers, worked according to an ancestral know‑how passed down from generation to generation. A true symbol of Korean culture, it has become over time an emblematic material, both aesthetic and functional.
Formerly used for writing, painting, screens, clothing or even windows, hanji paper occupied a central place in daily life and Korean crafts. Today it continues to inspire artists, artisans, designers and restorers around the world.
Recognized as an exceptional traditional craft, hanji paper is in the process of being inscribed on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list, thereby testifying to its universal importance and living legacy.
