On the sidelines of the 29th edition of the Paris International Fair
Photo at the Grand Palais (November 12 to 15, 2026), the Cultural Center invites you
to discover the exhibition Great Lakes – The Common Horizon of the Inland Seas by
exceptionally opening its doors on Saturday, November 14 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
(last entry 8:00 p.m.) free admission, and offers three guided tours by reservation of the exhibition by curator Catherine Bédard:
Guided tour in French at 2:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m.
Guided tour in English at 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m.
Guided tour in French at 6:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.
Spanning the border between Canada and the United States, making it disappear in its colossal fluid mass, the Great Lakes basin gathers millions of inhabitants around its perimeter, including Indigenous peoples of many First Nations of Canada and American tribes. An extraordinary surface drinking‑water resource (among the most important in the world); a place of circulation and exchange, of commerce, work, leisure, travel, meditation, but also of exploitation, danger, vulnerability; this immense basin has been observed from the diversity of its shores by Robert Burley, one of the most important Canadian photographers of our time.
The artist creates here a corpus as unprecedented as it is exceptional, where the grand beauty of this elusive whole, sometimes soothing, sometimes unsettling, turns into a reflection on the power of contemporary image. Stripped of any diversion, returning the Great Lakes to their original grandeur, Robert Burley's photographs call the viewer like enchanting sirens.

This project is labeled Bicentennial of Photography by
the Ministry of Culture and is part of the official program of the
Bicentennial from September 1, 2026 to September 30, 2027.
Inaugurated on the occasion of Nuit Blanche, this exhibition
also forms part of the official program of the Photodays festival, in
November 2026.
