In a global pedagogical and artistic coherence, it offers a learning of classical music to children who do not have easy access to this practice for economic, social or geographical reasons. The project is aimed at children aged 7 to 12 living in neighbourhoods under city policy (QPV) or in rural revitalization areas (ZRRs) away from places of practice. Each child is entrusted with a musical instrument for three years. Guided by music and social professionals, the various groups of children who form an orchestra attend weekly workshops of 3:30 hours on average, divided into families of instruments, and meet regularly for a Tutti rehearsal.
The success of the scheme is due, in particular, to appropriate educational guidance, cooperation between cultural and social actors, the development of specific collective pedagogy and the continuing training of stakeholders.
Evolution of the relationship to learning, self-confidence, concentration and listening, respect for others, creativity... The benefits of Demos are numerous and more than 13,000 children have already benefited. Initially centered on the Île-de-France region, the system was developed nationally from 2015 onwards and now has about 50 orchestras spread throughout France.
Coordinated by the Philharmonie de Paris, Demos is supported by the Ministère de la Culture, the Ministère de l'Aménagement du territoire et de la Decentralisation / Agence nationale de la cohesion des territoires (ANCT), the Ministère des Outre-Mer, and the caisses d'allocations familiales. To this funding is added the decisive one, that of more than 300 local authorities involved that host orchestras, and a community of committed patrons. It is sponsored by Lilian Thuram, President of the Education Against Racism Foundation, pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, philosopher Souleymane Bachir Diagne, and cellist Astrig Siranossian.
