"With mediocre works it eventually becomes boring. [But with] Mahler there is always something new. He is a composer with huge emotional intensity. Therefore his music never sounds the same," the conductor admitted in 2025. Klaus Mäkelä likes to refute the widespread idea that one has to wait until a certain age before conducting Mahler's music, and for several years he has been exploring its limits both with the Orchestre de Paris and with other ensembles. For Mahler, the Troisième Symphonie resolves the tension of the first two: goodbye "combat" and "douleur", "gaiété" arrives (the composer said). A hymn to nature, the symphony is divided into two parts: a massive first section, sometimes called "l’éveil de Pan"; then four shorter movements, some with vocal parts, leading to a magnificent final adagio that resembles a final reconciliation.
