Olive Oil Fair in Agios Ioannis

On October 25, the small village of Agios Ioannis in the Paphos district invites you to a festival dedicated to one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic symbols—the olive tree and olive oil.
The olive holds a special place in Cyprus’s history. Even the ancient Greek geographer and philosopher Strabo referred to the island as “Eveleos”—the land that produces excellent olive oil. For centuries, the olive branch has symbolized peace, wisdom, victory, and longevity, while olive oil itself remains an integral part of Cypriot cuisine and traditions.
At the fair, visitors will not only be able to sample local products but also see how olive oil was produced in the past. Guests will be shown the traditional pressing process using an ancient stone mill and an oil press with zempilia—woven baskets made from palm fibers.
And there will be plenty of delicious treats here, too!
- Tasting of various types of local olive oil
- Free toasted bread with olive oil
- Palouzes—a traditional Cypriot dessert made from grape juice and flour
- Resi—an old-fashioned dish made from wheat and meat
- Stalls featuring local products and delicacies
During the tasting, you’ll discover just how diverse olive oil can be, learn to distinguish its subtle flavors and aromas, and choose the one you like best.
Traditional music and performances by folk groups featuring Cypriot dances will add to the festive atmosphere.
This is a great opportunity to visit a Cypriot village this fall, discover local culinary traditions, and spend a day surrounded by the aromas of fresh bread, grapes, and olive oil.
