A three-day dedicated to the ancient art of stone, with actions that highlight the traditional architecture and cultural heritage of the place
Gourri invites us to the "Days of Xerolithias", a separate three-day event dedicated to one of the oldest techniques of building the Cypriot countryside. The program will take place from 25 to 27 September, bringing to the centre the art, utility and cultural value of dry stone.
Dry stone is called the technique of building walls and other stone-built works with stones placed and carefully fixed on one another, without the use of mud, cement or other binder. The stability of construction is based solely on the right choice, matching and placement of stones by the craftsman.
Dry stones are an integral part of the Cypriot landscape. For centuries they were used to create terraces on the slopes, delimiting spaces, holding soil and protecting against erosion. At the same time, they function as a shelter for small animals and plants, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity.
The "Days of Xerolithias in Gourri" aspire to recommend this precious traditional knowledge to younger generations and remind them that old techniques can offer solutions with respect to the environment and the natural landscape.
