The National Ballet of Slovenia presents for the first time in Cyprus the complete production of the famous work, set against the imposing Medieval Castle of Paphos.
One of the brightest, happiest and most beloved works of the classical repertoire comes to Cyprus for two unique outdoor performances. “Don Quixote”, with music by Ludwig Minkus, will be presented on September 25 and 26 at the Medieval Castle of Paphos, in a grand three‑act production by the National Ballet of Slovenia – Ballet Maribor.
Under the artistic direction of Edward Klug, Ballet Maribor is counted among the most important European dance companies, with an international presence and productions that combine classical tradition with a contemporary stage vision. This complete production is being presented for the first time in Cyprus, on a set that is expected to add even greater atmosphere and grandeur to the work.
Drawing inspiration from Miguel de Cervantes’ novel, the ballet focuses on the love story of Kitri and the young barber Basilio. The two lovers struggle to stay together, despite Kitri’s father’s wish to marry her to a rich but unsuitable suitor. The dream‑like Don Quixote becomes involved in the story, and with his romantic imagination and unwavering belief in the ideals of chivalry, helps the young couple claim their happiness.
Full of humor, romance and Spanish temperament, the performance stands out for its demanding choreography, impressive solos, skillful jumps and lively ensemble scenes. Minkus’s famous music creates a world full of rhythm, colour and intensity, transporting the audience to the squares and festivals of a sunny Spain.
The choreography is by Cristof Novogrudski, the set design by Juan Guerrero Nova and the costumes by Luca Dal’ Alpi. The production combines the technical perfection of classical ballet with rich scenery, colourful costumes and strong theatricality.
Against the backdrop of the illuminated Medieval Castle and the harbour of Lower Paphos, “Don Quixote” promises two unforgettable evenings in which classical art will meet the unique atmosphere of one of the most beautiful historic sites in Cyprus.
