The 1610 masterpiece, from which the copious Magnificat culminates, has long fascinated Simon-Pierre Bestion. Taking advantage of the freedom offered by the score, he chooses vocal and instrumental colors that are distinctly Mediterranean, and includes 17th‑century faux bourdon and Gregorian antiphons. “What matters to me,” he writes, “is the coherence of the great ritual.” This powerful, rich and personal rereading of the montéverdien masterpiece radiates the fervor of collective momentum, the uniqueness of a creative approach – which the lights by Marianne Pelcerf and the spatial staging further highlight – and a consummate art of recomposition emblematic of the French conductor’s proposals and his ensemble.
