Learning to read in kindergarten: a crucial issue for reducing school failure and inequalities.
Since the publication of the Natural Laws of the Child, Céline Alvarez has occupied a singular place in the French educational debate. Through her research and pedagogical experiments, she defends an approach to learning based on discoveries from neuroscience, children's autonomy, and the pleasure of learning.
On the occasion of the release of her new book, she will revisit an issue that now seems central to her for preventing school failure and sustainably reducing inequalities: learning to read. Because today one in two children in 4th grade stumble over words when they read and do not understand a simple fifteen‑line text.
Drawing on the most recent scientific studies and the specificities of the French language, Céline Alvarez will show why learning to read in kindergarten rather than in CP is one of the most effective levers to prevent school failure and sustainably reduce social inequalities.
