Rashid was taken from Daesh prisons and returned to his family in Sinjar, a mountainous region in northeastern Iraq. Today a teenager, this young Yezidi dreams of a better future for his country, in full reconstruction. But in Sinjar, peace remains fragile, and hatred against the Yezidi minority resurfaces.
Rashid, it is first a smile, sometimes a snuffed moth, and a body that grows too fast, like that of so many teenagers. But the boy's childhood was torn from him. On 3 August 2014, two months after the capture of Mosul and the proclamation of the Caliphate, the Islamic State (IS) launched an ethnic cleansing against the "unbelievers", targeting in particular the Yezidi religious minorities of the Sinjar Mountains. This massacre killed more than 5,000 people and displaced another 400,000. Men over the age of 12 are executed or forcibly converted, while women and children are captured, detained, enslaved or sent to combat.
