My friends, remember this, there are no weeds nor bad men. There are only bad cultivators.
Victor Hugo, Les Misérables, Paris, Pagnerre, 1862, p. 50
When Cameron Mackintosh discovers, in 1982, the French concept album of Les Misérables, he immediately detects the potential of the work composed, four years earlier, by Alain Boublil (text) and Claude-Michel Schönberg (music). From then on, the English producer meets the authors in Paris and in 1985, Les Misérables are on the bill at the Barbican Center (London), in a version adapted to English and American musical standards. Since then, the work has become one of the greatest successes of the genre with more than 150,000 performances in nearly 500 cities worldwide, 130 million spectators, over 150 international awards, and the show has been translated into 27 languages. Long ignored by the French public, the work is the subject of a new French production during the 2024-2025 season, on the stage of the Théâtre du Châtelet, a high point of musical theatre in Paris.
A true plea for social justice, it is carried by a troupe that makes the audience rediscover the great numbers of this musical comedy conceived as an opera: J’avais rêvé, À la volonté du peuple, Mon Histoire, Le Grand jour… To ever better serve Victor Hugo's masterpiece, Alain Boublil corrected, adapted and modified the libretto, while Claude-Michel Schönberg reworked the score. And to magnify this new French production of Les Misérables, Ladislas Chollat chose a stripped‑down staging, without embellishment, in order to give full space to the story, the text and its interpretation. The success was confirmed, both with the public and the critics, as Les Misérables have again received new awards, including a Molière and several musical theatre trophies. Inscribed in the musical heritage, and because “nothing is more beautiful than being a prophet in one's own country”, the work returns to the stage of the Théâtre du Châtelet. À la volonté du peuple!
