Les Échappées inattendues du CNRS, these events and meetings, open to everyone near you, where you can discuss, experiment, explore and exchange opinions with scientists. Over the course of an evening, debates or just a few minutes they invite you to ask questions about our society, its transitions, the state of knowledge, global planetary problems, innovations and much more.
Building the city of the future with the living

How to limit the sprawl of cities, inspired by the ability of proteins to change shape? How do penguins teach us to better protect buildings from the cold? So many examples illustrating the potential of biomimicry in architecture! For a long time focused on observing the characteristics of the living to develop innovative solutions, it now shifts to a global approach driven by social and environmental issues. It no longer seeks merely to imitate nature, but to design buildings and cities embedded in a continuous dialogue with residents and living nature, to promote biodiversity and address social and climate challenges.
Natasha Chayaamor-Heil
Natasha Chayaamor-Heil — architect and researcher in the field of biomimetic strategies applied to architecture and urban planning, in the Architecture Ville Urbanisme Environnement laboratory (LAVUE, CNRS/ENSA Paris-La Villette/ENSA Paris-Val de Seine/Université Paris 8 Vincennes St-Denis/Université Paris Nanterre). She develops reflections on the processes by which societies translate phenomena observed in the living into architectural design and urban environment planning. Moreover, taking into account the cultural specificities of territories, she investigates how human activity shapes nature.
Moss at hand !

What if one of the ways to combat ocean pollution lies in the foam of waves? Under certain conditions, marine mosses form on coasts, capable of concentrating pollutant particles. Thanks to their ability to filter microplastics, as well as microalgae whose toxins can cause intestinal or neurological disorders, they today inspire the development of biocompatible artificial mosses intended for cleaning the marine environment.

Florence Elias, lecturer at Université Paris Cité and researcher in the Physique et Mécanique des Milieux Hétérogènes laboratory (PMMH, CNRS/ESPCI Paris – PSL/Sorbonne Université/Université Paris Cité), studies complex fluids, soft matter, in particular liquid moss.
What dragonflies teach drones

At the cusp of the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci envisioned the ornithopter — a flying device with flapping wings, hoping that man could take flight by reproducing bird flight. And today the living continues to inspire innovations in the aerospace sector: what if dragonflies, thanks to their aerial feats — remarkable endurance, acrobatics, ability to perform hovering flight or adapt flight after wing damage — became the key to creating more maneuverable and robust drones?
Camille Aracheloff
Camille Aracheloff — researcher at Institut Pascal (CNRS/Université Clermont Auvergne). She defended a dissertation in biomechanics dedicated to the flight mechanisms of dragonflies at the Institut de Systématique, Évolution et Biodiversité (ISYEB, CNRS/EPHE – PSL/MNHN/Sorbonne Université/Université des Antilles) and in the Physique et Mécanique des Milieux Hétérogènes laboratory (PMMH, CNRS/ESPCI Paris – PSL/Sorbonne Université/Université Paris Cité). In this work she studied how the morphology of dragonfly wings influences their flight characteristics, to explore possible applications in the development of bio‑inspired drones.
