Nature rights: a response to the ecological crisis?

Many citizen initiatives and international experiences can serve as inspiration, especially in Latin America, where the notions of Pachamama (Mother Earth) and buen vivir (good living) are politically and legally mobilizing.
Recognizing our common history and our vital interdependence with all the elements that make up the biosphere, and rethinking more broadly the relationships between human societies and the living world, could it lead to transforming law with an environmental justice perspective, particularly by providing tools for ecosystem protection and recognizing new crimes, such as ecocide?
The time has come to make the world differently.

Marine Calmet, lawyer and activist for the recognition of the Rights of Nature, co‑founder and director of the association Wild Legal. She is the author of: Decolonizing Law, published by Wildproject (2024) and of: Justice for the Starfish: Towards the Recognition of the Ocean’s Rights, co‑written with François Sarano, published by Actes Sud (2025).
Laurent Fonbaustier, professor of public law at Université Paris‑Saclay. His work focuses on the history of political ideas and constitutional spaces, fundamental freedoms and environmental law. He is the author of: The Ecological Refoundation of the World, published by PUF (2026) and of Environment, series Le mot est faible, published by Anamosa (2021).
Alfredo Gomez‑Muller, emeritus professor at the University of Tours (Latin American studies, political philosophy), member of the Popular University for the Earth (UPT, Tours), of the interdisciplinary research unit Interactions Culturelles et Discursives (ICD, Tours) and of the research group in contemporary political theory (TEOPOCO, National University of Colombia). He is the author of The Rights of Mother Earth. Nature, Pachamama and buen vivir, published by Wildproject (2024) and of Andean Communalism and Good Governance. The Utopian Memory of the Inca Garcilaso, published by Libertalia, 2022.
This meeting will be moderated by Anne‑Sophie Simpere, journalist notably at the Observatory of Multinationals and Reporterre.
The bookstore Le Pied à Terre (9 rue Custine, 18th) will be present: a signing session will allow the meeting to continue in a more informal way.
