The Industrial Revolution not only brought a hope of economic development in Great Britain, it was also the subject of a strong opposition movement in the 1860s. John Ruskin, art critic and theorist, as well as William Morris indeed denounced this mercantile conservatism and especially the loss of the creative values of craftsmanship. This lecture invites you to dive into the history of their movement, a precursor of the Art Nouveau style in Europe, and to discover its lines and its aesthetic inspired by the medieval era.
Éloïse Le Bozec is a lecturer and art historian, specialist of the 19th and 20th centuries. She has been running since January 2026 the art and craftsmanship history series at the Violette Leduc media library.
