Musicians don’t choose each other, they recognize each other. Ricardo Izquierdo and Sergio Gruz know each other, they have recognized each other. This Raices en Acuerdo project by the duo celebrates roots. The Cuban‑origin saxophonist and the Argentine‑origin pianist draw from their respective musical roots. Whether it’s “Drume negrita,” that Cuban children’s song, “Llora,” “Cartas de amor que se queman,” or “La trunca norte” immortalized by Mercedes Sosa, these Cuban songs bathed in gentle nostalgia that sing the joys and disillusions of love and pierce hearts. Or whether it’s “Soledad,” that nocturne bathed in the black light of melancholy by tango master Astor Piazzolla, Ricardo Izquierdo and Sergio Gruz have chosen for their reinterpretation the spirit rather than the letter. This lively silver duo has the force of obviousness. Listening, shared breathing, collective stimulation, there is a connivance, a great complicity, even a fusion of intentions and gestures that carries the music to its incandescences.
