The Statue of Liberty or Lady Liberty, is not only the icon of New York and the United States: it is also a masterpiece of ingenuity... French! Born in late 19th-century Paris, in the Gaget and Auguste Bartholdi workshops, its construction has mobilized know-how, trades and men capable of pushing the technical limits of their time.
On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States, the MuAM invites you to dive behind the scenes of this exceptional construction site, through an unprecedented and immersive tour. Between video projections, 3D devices and real decors, enter the scenes of a work shaped in sweat, animated by daring and carried by genius.
In immersion in workshops
From the first enlargement techniques to the big start for New York, the exhibition makes you live, step by step, the building of Lady Liberty! Fracas of martelage, smell of wet plaster, appearance of Auguste Bartholdi... sensory wandering leads you into the effervescence of Gaget workshops.
Under its windows, immersive devices reveal the shaping of plaster models and the realization of the first wooden templates, on a real scale. Further on, it is in the heart of the forges that you are immersed, where each copper plate comes to assemble on metal frames. The visit route ends in the insides of the statue, which give to see the ingenious frame designed by Gustave Eiffel... before he was put in cash for his trip across the Atlantic.
Materials and men
Forgerons, carpenters, sculptors, boilermakers... Nearly ten trades, most of which still exist, then activate to give life to this giant of copper and iron! In the tumult of the workshops, every gesture counts, every imbricious know-how at the service of a true collective epic made of challenges, craft prowess and technical experimentation.
Pieces of Lady Liberty
The exhibition presents iconic pieces from MuAM collections and releases for the occasion, from its reserves! Models of the head made of copper and plaster, molding of an ear, copper index size... These are valuable witnesses that give a closer look at the matter, gestures and ingenuity at work in this extraordinary human and technical adventure.
