Carried by the Belgian‑Congolese eco‑futurist artist Precy Numbi, the workshop dedicated to the Eco‑Masked proposes work that aims to repotentialize what seem to everyone to be waste, scraps.
Plastics, electronic components, metals, manufactured fragments and abandoned objects are diverted from their original function to compose singular figures, both costumes, armors, presences and extensions of self. Subtracted from the status of scrap, these materials re‑enter a circulation cycle where they regain a capacity to act, to tell stories and to connect. They become the keepers of memories, trajectories and experiences that can be collectively reactivated.
Precy Numbi’s approach is part of a reflection that articulates resilience, repair and environmental consciousness. Nourished by cross‑border trajectories and by an attention to the narratives contained in objects, his work envisions each recovered element as the silent witness of our uses, our movements and the production systems that shape our ways of inhabiting the world.
Throughout the sessions, participants are invited to develop their own figures, to invent silhouettes that carry stories, contemporary mythologies and projections.
The workshop also draws on the ancestral functions of the mask as a tool for gathering, transmission and collective care. Reinterpreted in a context crossed by ecological crises and technological mutations, it becomes an operator of transformation allowing us to imagine other forms of coexistence and to inhabit the living differently.
Through this experience, the issues related to overproduction, resource depletion and the globalized circulations of matter are addressed not from the angle of guilt‑induction but as many starting points to develop new forms of responsibility, vigilance and re‑appropriation. It is less about denouncing than about making possible another reading of what is abandoned, by revealing the transformative potentials contained in the margins of our societies.
Thought of as a space of transmission and emancipation, Les Éco‑Maskés values experimentation, mutual aid and the plurality of experiences. The forms produced temporarily join the universe developed by the artist: an eco‑futurist Republic without borders, populated by resilient figures, reparative presences and narratives capable of linking multiple social, cultural and geographical realities. The week will conclude with a public activation of the works created. Investing the spaces of the Centre and their surroundings, the participants will bring forth an ephemeral community whose appearances will transform the restitution time into a contemporary ritual of reappropriation, sharing, and collective celebration. The masks and adornments designed during the workshop will then become vectors of a living aesthetic, where the act of repairing merges with that of inventing new ways of being together.
