Paleo-bioinspiration: when fossils inspire the future

Did you know
that the study of the bones of giant extinct mammals
such as mammoths and giant rhinoceroses allows
today to design structures that are both lightweight and strong? Fossil
species are nearly a thousand times more numerous than current species and offer a wonderful field of exploration for contemporary
engineering.
Paleo-bioinspiration consists in studying extinct species, their
adaptations and ways of life in order to draw inspiration to develop
new products, processes and systems, notably within a
sustainable development perspective. The applications are multiple:
architectures inspired by extinct giant organisms, aeronautical
innovations based on the study of flying vertebrates of the past,
underwater structures inspired by fossil marine species, protective
materials developed from external skeletons or armors of extinct species, or also adaptation strategies to climate change. Come

Alexandra
Houssaye is
a paleontologist, research director at CNRS and specialist in functional
morphology within the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle. Her work
focuses on the adaptation of the skeleton during vertebrate evolution.
Her studies on current organisms allow her to propose reliable functional
hypotheses for extinct species and thus better characterize
their way of life and locomotor or physiological capacities. Her research
contributes thus to a better understanding of the evolutionary history of
vertebrates and allows her to reflect on possibilities of
paleo-bioinspiration.
