In many Arab societies, marriage involves a family, a status, a reputation. The dress, the venue, the number of guests or the dowry become social signs.
In Algeria, the doors sometimes remain open to the whole village; in Egypt, some families go into debt to prepare the dowry; in the Comoros, the big wedding can mobilize the savings of an entire lifetime.
This staging of the wedding contributes to social recognition and belonging to the group.
