From Greece to Rome, from Rome to Alexandria, from Alexandria to Baghdad, from Baghdad to Padua... Medical knowledge has the book as its main tool, a book that also demonstrates the extraordinary continuity of the ethics of the medical profession, especially in its relationship with the patient. Medical texts remain alive, as evidenced by many annotated and commented books by doctors of several generations, sometimes in different languages.
Between the 7th and 16th centuries of the common era, the Arab-Muslim world profoundly marked medicine by a major evolution of concepts and techniques. This long period opens and ends with a linguistic revolution: the transition from Greek to Arabic, then from Arabic to Latin, two privileged moments of questioning and debate.
In the five themes of the exhibition – translating, transmitting, debating, experimenting, treating – sumptuously illuminated manuscripts, incunables and prints illustrated with engravings occupy the heart of the presentation, alongside objects in use in pharmacopoeia and surgery. In parallel to the heritage collection, digital animations invite you to discover the geography of this medical adventure, its great figures, their theories about the body, their practices of consultation, their recommendations for the preservation of good health, the manufacture of compound medicines...
The exhibition aims to raise awareness of medical knowledge as the product of a multi-secular brewing of men and influences, advocating tolerance and openness to each other in our times of identity retreats and certainty.
