L’Homme sans qualités by Robert Musil appears in two stages, in 1930 and 1932. In this huge and unfinished work the Austrian author ironically explores the decline of the semi‑fictional empire Cacanie at the dawn of the XXᵉ siècle and through it the inevitable collapse of European culture on the eve of the Première Guerre mondiale.
Julien Vella and the group Caute decided to bring this monumental novel to the stage, prioritising the questions that permeate its plot: how to live in an age of profit, nationalism and wars? How can the younger generation challenge cynicism and nostalgia to invent its own language and resist the looming decay?
Like the book, which combines registers — satire, story, essay, scientific prose and ruffled metaphysics — they make fragments of songs, dances, clown numbers, pantomime or stand‑up coexist as a multitude of scenes.
And like the novel, they stubbornly refuse to finish. Here they play not the end of the world,
