View of France, China's industrial and technological ascent is no longer a distant news. Energy transition, electric car, semiconductors, textiles: it is now the backdrop of some of our most urgent debates.
How can a power build so fast, and at what cost? Dan Wang, in China at full speed, offers an original framework to understand the Chinese trajectory. To the American "lawyer society", which is intended to regulate and challenge, he opposes an "engineering state" which views China as a permanent site. Faced with these two giants of the 21st century, Europe sometimes struggles to define its own model.
Best seller of the New York Times, finalist of the Financial Times Business Book of the Year and named the best book of the year by The New Yorker, China at all speed was hailed as one of the most striking essays of its time.
Its author, Dan Wang, an analyst who has lived in China for more than ten years and now a researcher at the Hoover Institution of Stanford University, will discuss this thesis with Arancha González Laya, former Spanish Foreign Minister and Dean of the Paris School of International Affairs (PSIA) of Sciences Po, as well as Pierre Haski, former Beijing correspondent, geopolitical columnist for the New Obs and France Inter, President of Reporters Without Borders.
Together, they will question the growing rivalry between Beijing and Washington, the new economic and technological wars, the recomposition of global supply chains and the room for manoeuvre still available to Europe to defend its model, interests and values.
Moderated by François Reynaert, journalist and essayist at the Nouvel Obs, this meeting, organized in partnership with Le Nouvel Obs, the Fondation Jean-Jaurès and Les Éditions Arpa, invites us to take the measure of the balance of power that is already shaping the 21st century world. A translation will be proposed to allow the public to follow all the exchanges.
