Anne-Cécile Vandalem,
Born in 1937, Philip Glass is, along with Steve Reich and Terry Riley, one of the pioneers of minimalist music, an artistic movement born in the United States in the early sixties. Refusing any form of aesthetic or stylistic assignment, he explores many genres and deplores the distinction between so‑called “serious” music and popular music. Nevertheless – and despite all the conventions that define him – Philip Glass has not given up writing opera. Thus he created Einstein on the Beach at the Festival d’Avignon, in 1976. The result of a close collaboration with director Bob Wilson, this opera breaks with tradition, shaking up the norms of narration and composition.
Working in a three‑work cycle, the composer chooses Jean Cocteau’s scenarios as librettos when he begins his new trilogy. And on June 4, 1994, at the theatre of the Maestranza of Seville, the audience witnesses an adaptation of La Belle et la Bête in an unprecedented form: an opera‑film. Nothing remains of the original score by Georges Auric. Indeed, Philip Glass decided to synchronize his own composition with the film made by Jean Cocteau, so that the sung text aligns with the actors’ lips during the screening!
By appropriating this tale, which became a film and then an opera, director Anne-Cécile Vandalem will not have failed to re‑question the work in general and the character of Belle in particular. From now on, the story is told from the heroine’s point of view. Through the camera, on stage, Anne-Cécile Vandalem develops a device that offers a critical look at the history of cinema and literature. Without ever erasing anything from the fiction and the power of fascination it exerts on the reader and the spectator, the staging here aims to amplify and illuminate the eye on the power dynamics between masculine and feminine.
