Made by Murnau and released in 1927, L’Aurore (Sunrise) is a fundamental film, praised as one of the pinnacles of cinema history. François Truffaut called it the “most beautiful film in the world”. A true technical and narrative feat, it invents camera movements of unprecedented fluidity and is also one of the first feature films to have a synchronized soundtrack, integrating sound effects and music. A universal fable about love – as its subtitle A Song of Two Humans highlights – L’Aurore has continuously inspired filmmakers and musicians. For this evening, Alexandre Tharaud, who readily cites the film as one of his “classics” of choice, provides the musical accompaniment.
