When an urban and popular dance from Cairo becomes a symbol of citizen struggle… A high‑tension tribute to the rebellious vitality of Mahraganat and to aspirations of freedom, by a choreographer with authentic experience.
Artistic muse of a joyful protest by Egyptian youth, the urban Mahraganat music and dances are the festive expression of a cultural and political rebellion. In Just One Tile, Islam Elarabi evokes the intimate and collective energies that have moved the people proclaiming their thirst for freedom on Tahrir Square.
The choreographer and dancer who trained in Cairo injects here the spirit of contemporary dance into an intense display of joy, fear, fury and hope, where we relive the emotions of the Egyptian revolution. Mahraganat, also called electro chaâbi, inseparable from the popular and democratic movement, consists of sensual dances frowned upon by the authorities and songs banned from radio, because of their rhythms (electro, rap, reggaeton) and suggestive lyrics.
But Islam Elarabi also evokes the dramatic character of the 2011 events and shows how in Egypt even the smallest space can become a stage for dance. His balances between heroism, commitment and fragility, like a universal metaphor for emancipatory popular movements.
Performance organized as part of the Mediterranean Season 2026
In partnership with the festival Les Traversées du Marais (from September 5 to 6 2026)
The filigree finesse of a poetic choreographic language, aware of applying strength by relying only on the head and the heart.
