Director Agnieszka Juszczak follows in the footsteps of major Polish artist Alina Szapocznikow to understand how her life—marked by war, exile and illness—shaped her work. Arriving in Paris in November 1947, she develops her sculpture in her encounter with the artistic spirit of the capital, where she will meet César, and then through her many trips back and forth between Poland and France until 1963.
Gradually, her experience of the ghettos and camps—Pabianice, Łódź and Bergen-Belsen, where she stayed for about ten months—emerges as a subtle thread in her work. By exhuming fragments of her past, Juszczak's film weaves an imagined dialogue in this intimate investigation between two eras, two countries, two Polish women who emigrated to France.
In the presence of the director.
In conversation with Karolina Szymaniak, senior lecturer in Central European studies at Sorbonne Université.
With the support of the Fondation pour la mémoire de la Shoah.
