Ion by Euripides is a major open-air theatre production staged in Cyprus by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC), performed across Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol in July 2026, directed by the acclaimed Thomas Moschopoulos. The production is part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival 2026 and brings one of Euripides' most enigmatic works to iconic Cypriot venues, with all performances starting at 21:00.
🎟️ Ticket prices start from €10 (€20 standard / €10 reduced).
Ion is not a straightforward tragedy — it moves between the tragic and the comic, myth and realism, mysticism and scepticism, placing questions of identity and belonging at its heart. Set at the sacred Oracle of Apollo at Delphi, the young Ion grows up nameless and unaware of his origins, struggling to piece together a coherent identity, while the audience already knows the truth.
Thomas Moschopoulos, who previously collaborated with THOC on Gogol's The Inspector General, returns to direct a fresh reading of this Euripidean drama — a playwright he has engaged with repeatedly (The Bacchae, Alcestis, Iphigenia in Tauris). The production transforms the stage into a multi-layered space where truth and illusion overlap, keeping the question of identity open, fluid and urgent.
Lead cast: Giannis Tsoumarakis (Ion), Stela Fyrogeni (Creusa), Neoklis Neokleou (Xouthos), Valentinos Kokkinos (Tutor). Music composition and soundscape design by Nama Dama.
